Brief Background
Peter Thomson is an Associate Professor of Biometry at The University of Sydney. His academic training was in zoology and statistics. He has spent most of his career teaching applied statistics to agricultural, veterinary and medical audiences. His research background is quite broad, but with a focus on quantitative genetics, and epidemiology, often with a ‘big data’ perspective. However, increasingly, his interests are in international agricultural development, assisting in-country researchers implementing and evaluating their programs, and developing their research skills. He has been involved in development projects and capacity building in Kenya, Zambia, Tanzania, Tibet, Vietnam, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.

Presentation Title:
The Digital Future: The Role of ‘Big Data’ for Agricultural Development in the Region

Making optimal decisions for agricultural improvement should be evidence-based and this requires the collection of appropriate data, careful data analysis, and drawing of appropriate conclusions. Until recently, data sets available for this process were often manually collected and processed. However, increasingly, large-scale data sets, known as ‘big data’ are being generated automatically, and this presents new opportunities. Relevant areas of ‘big data’ in the agricultural and animal production sector, in particular, are in the area of genomics, mapping, fine-scale climate data, and are often freely available. Utilizing these free resources, in particular, has a great potential, particular counties in the region.

Professor Defa Li specializes in basic theory and application technology development of feed resources. He has constructed data bank and dynamic models of pig feed raw material available nutrients, created the first dynamic models of pig nutrient requirement in China and in charge of reversing feed standard of swine (2004), contributed greatly to animal husbandry and feedstuff industry of China. He has published 205 academic papers and has won National Scientific and Technological Progress Award second class three times, hold 12 China Invention Patent, established or reversed 8 national or industrial standards. He has trained 143 postgraduate and post-doctorate and two of his doctor students won the prize of National Excellent 100 Doctoral Dissertation.

Del Barrio started his early career in research as Science Research Specialist I at Philippine Carabao Research and Development Centre Institute of Animal Science, UP Los Baños, College, Laguna (1983-1988). Currently, he is an Executive Director of Philippine Carabao Centre. He also is a life member of Philippine Society of Animal Science and Philippine Society of Animal Nutritionists where he has served as a President for those societies previously. Professor Emeritus Dr. Eimei Sato started his early career in research as Rockefeller foundation special postdoctoral fellow at The Rockefeller University,
USA. After that, he has been appointed as an Associate Professor at Department of Animal Science, Kyoto University and Institute of Medical Science, The University of Tokyo before becoming a Professor at Tohoku University (1997-2013). He is also a visiting professor at University Malaysia Sabah, (2010) and Distinguished Professor at Tohoku University from 2008 to 2011. He also held a position as President of Japan National Livestock Breeding Center from 2013 to 2017. Prof. Emeritus Dr. Eimei Sato has received many awards such as AAAP Animal Science Award (2006), Medal with purple ribbon, Japanese Government (2009) and Japan Academy Prize (2013) to name a few. He has served as a Presidents of Japanese Society of Animal Reproduction (2003-2005), Japanese Society of Animal Science (2007-2009), Japan Society of Fertilization and Implantation (2006-2010), Editor-in-Chief, Journal of Reproduction and Development (2001-2003), The Council Member, Science Council of Japan(2011-2017), The foreign member, and The Royal Swedish Academy of Agriculture and Forestry (2011-present)

Professor Cheol-Heui YUN grew up in Gwang-ju, a southwest of the Republic of Korea. He was educated at the Chonnam National University for B. Sc. and the Seoul National University for his M. Sc. in the area of Animal Nutrition. Professor Yun completed his Ph. D. at the University of Saskatchewan, Canada in the area of immune modulation and mucosal immunology. Then, he pursued his professional career at leading research institutes in a different region of the world including International Vaccine Institute (IVI, Korea), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA, USA), National Institutes of Health (NIH, USA) and
Gothenburg University (Sweden) where he undertook research related to stressors, vaccine, infection and host protective immunity. Currently, he serves as editor of a number of societies including World Journal of Immunology, Frontiers in Molecular Innate Immunity, Journal of Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering, Scientific World Journal, Journal of Microbiology, and Science Editing. He was selected and currently serves as a Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Asian-Australasian Journal of Animal Sciences. He also served as the President of Korean Dendritic Cell Academic Society in the past. Recently, his interest has focused on the action mechanism of (1) stress and modulation of host immune responses, (2) vaccine and adjuvants, and (3) nutritional balance, microbiota, and immune modulation.

Professor Dr. Yoo Yong Kim has been a professor of Seoul National University since 2011. He received a Ph.D. degree from The Ohio State University, USA in 1999. He has served more than 25 years on researchers, teaching and international collaboration in the field of animal production and sciences. He has achieved outstanding researchers in many disciplines of animal sciences including nutritional and practical management of swine and animal welfare. His current research interest is an adaptation of animal welfare in sow’s facility; functional food production in poultry and swine; evaluation of microorganism in GI tract of a pig by PCR method; evaluation of nutrients utilization in gilt and sow looking on the reproduction and longevity and many more.

Dr. Liang Chou Hsia has been an emeritus professor of National Pingtung University of Science and Technology, Taiwan since 2013. He builds a new research institute in 2013 and continues to devote himself to researchers, farmer extension, and international collaboration. He received a Ph.D. degree from Edinburgh University, UK in 1981. He has served more than 40 years on researchers, teaching and international collaboration in the field of animal production and sciences. He has achieved outstanding researchers in many disciplines of animal sciences including animal production systems, environmental management, animal welfare and nutritional management.

Dr. Seng Mom gained her BSc from Royal University of Agriculture (RUA), Phnom Penh, in the field of animal production and health. In 2001, she earned her MSc from Goettingen University, Germany, her research worked on improving cattle growth performance with supplementation cassava leave and rumen manipulation. She continued to do research on different composition grass, legume, and forb on feed degradability and methane emission for her Ph.D. study at the same university. After her BSc graduate, she is employed at the Royal University of Agriculture since 1996. She is now the Vice Rector of the university for planning and international cooperation. Beside her management task, she continues her research activities in the field of animal nutrition and production. With that, she found the Center for Livestock Development Studies, as a research unit within the university.  She is also a leading member of the 10 years university strategic plan and member of the development committee for Ministry of Agriculture Forestry and Fisheries 2030 strategic plan in Cambodia. With her tremendous commitment and effort, Dr. Seng Mom got an award as SEARCA’s Emerging Leaders in Transition Economies (ELITE) at SEARCA’s golden anniversary celebration on 25 November 2016.

Professor Dr. Md. Kabirul Islam Khan has been a professor of Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Sciences University since 2004. Sustainability of Birds Nest Resources and Production to Meet Global Demand

Meat science and technology, Biochemistry of muscles and further processed meat products, with focus on poultry meat and fish proteins being value added to meet local consumer satiety and demand. Lately, over the last 5 years, edible birds nest was researched upon for its proof of its goodness, using biochemical mean and bioassays to provide evidence from a scientific point the traditional claims of antiaging, anti-inflammatory, anti hypertension and many health-related illnesses.

Research development, commercialization, and marketing of the bird’s nest industry if not managed seriously by the concerned countries and governments will see the demise and “death” of the bird’s nest industry globally. Efforts by MOA in Malaysia, with DVS leading the surveillance, management, and business of bird nest is inadequate in view of the realities of this lucrative product being plundered, short chained and abuse at all levels of the value chain by the unscrupulous parties locally and globally, enough to destroy what’s is God’s gift to mankind. Conventional harvesting, cleaning, and processing of birds nest are traditional; time consuming and laborious, leading to unintentional economic and nutritional losses.  Addressing these issues at this auspicious AAAP conference is not going to stop the continuous depletion of the bird’s nest breeding ground, production rate and farmers dire straits efforts to secure long term returns. This may due to the fact that current and future demand is in multiple-fold while supply is insufficient although it’s not the fault of the inherent producing countries to meet the hungry demand of the rich countries of China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Singapore. This talk will highlight the Malaysian government efforts in sustaining bird nest farming industry and explore the strength and weaknesses of the past and present situations leading to the present state of affairs of our precious swiftlet bird nest industry.

 

ADJUNCT PROF. DR. PETER WYNN

The Use and Misuse of Antibiotics in the Developing World

Professor Peter Wynn was awarded his Ph.D. from the University of Sydney in 1983. He has spent his career investigating physiological mechanisms underlying animal production including lactation, muscle growth, wool fiber growth and stress across the dairy and beef cattle, sheep and pig industries. He has also lead projects in South Asia developing the efficiency of small-holder farming practices. He was appointed as Professor of Animal Production at Charles Sturt University, Wagga Wagga Australia in 2008 after a long career at the University of Sydney and CSIRO. He is currently an Adjunct Professor at Charles Sturt University and has honorary appointments at the Universities of Sydney and Melbourne.
He became a Fellow of the Australian Society of Animal Production in 2010 and was awarded the Asian Australasian Associations of Animal Production Animal Science Prize for contributions to Animal Science in the Asian region in 2014.  He was inducted as a Life Member of the Australian Inter-collegiate Meat Judging Association for his pioneering work in the development of this meat science education program also in 2014. He has published over 100 full journal publications and over 150 conference papers.
He has been a member of the AAAP Advisory Board since 1996.

The revolution in the therapeutic control of infectious diseases initiated by the discovery of the antibiotic penicillin in 1928 has resulted in the development of a wide range of antibiotics derived from various biological resources used in human medicine and animal production.  Since these natural molecules are found in nature to protect their host organisms against invasive microbia, it is not surprising that these bacteria develop survival mechanisms to resist their functionality. Following their discovery, it was quickly realized that they could be used at low levels as feed additives to selectively decrease the microbial load in the gastrointestinal tract and therefore increase the efficiency of feed utilisation by as much as 15%.  Together with their over-prescription in human medicine, this practice has accelerated the process of microbial resistance.  The complement of genes responsible for the multiple resistance mechanisms including the synthesis of antibiotic targeted enzymes are easily transferred across species including humans through zoonotic transfer. Naturally occurring alternatives to the use of antibiotics as growth promotants across the poultry, pig and ruminant production industries have now been investigated extensively. A range of herbal and plant extracts have been identified as potential alternatives to act as natural antibiotics which also have anti-inflammatory properties. The search for other alternatives will need to continue to maintain our world supply of food animal protein.
