We are not far away from the 18th Asian Australasian Animal Production Congress which will be held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia from 1st to 4th August 2018.

We hope that you are all looking forward to spending time in the Land of the Hornbills and in the Cat City! We look forward to welcoming you in true Borneo style! Here is some information that we would like to bring to your attention as you prepare for your journey and stay in Kuching.

CONGRESS GUIDELINES

Instructions for Poster Presentation

  • Posters should be prepared according to A1 size (ISO 216 Standard A1), measuring 594 mm by 841 mm (23.4 inches × 33.1 inches) with portrait orientationKindly note that the poster boards on which your posters will be mounted on are white.
  • The language used for the posters must be English.
  • The contents of your poster should be readable from at least a meter distance.
  • Papers scheduled for presentation in poster sessions will be numbered and listed in the conference program. The same numbers are also used for numbering the poster boards.
  • It is the author’s responsibility to display his/her poster.
  • All posters should be mounted before 8 a.m. and removed by 5 p.m., on the day of your scheduled session.
  • The conference organizers do not take any responsibility for posters not removed after the scheduled dismantling time.
  • Materials for installation of the posters shall be provided by the conference secretariat.
  • Presenters are required to be near their posters for discussion of their research during the designated poster sessions.

Instructions for Oral Presentation

  • Oral presentation time is 15 minutes including approx. 3 minutes for discussion. Prepare your oral presentation for a maximum of 12 minutes.
  • Please adhere to the time given as timing will be strictly controlled for smooth running of sessions.
  • For audio-visual support, data projection facilities are available in all lecture halls. It will not be possible to use a personal laptop.
  • Speakers are kindly requested to use PowerPoint MS Office.
  • On preparing a PowerPoint file for presentation, please ensure that all graphics are embedded in the presentation file. If non-standard fonts are used, this should also be embedded in the presentation files.
  • Only Windows-compatible PowerPoint 2003/2007/2010/2013/2016 can be used. When creating your presentation with a Macintosh computer, bring the presentation file only after ensuring that it can be played on a Windows (OS) PCThe Speaker Media Room is located next to the Congress Registration Desk at the Concourse of Borneo Convention Centre Kuching.
  • Store your presentation in a USB memory stick or CD-R (CD-RW cannot be used), and bring it to the Speaker Media Room. Please give the appropriate files for oral presentation to the AAAP 2018 Congress Secretariat representative at the Media Check Desk.
  • In order to avoid copying errors, please confirm that your USB stick is functional by opening its files in a PC other than the one you used to create it. The name of the file should be labelled with the name of presenter and the paper number as per indicated on the 18th AAAP 2018 Congress Program.
  • Please do not operate “Presenter View” on PowerPoint to proceed your presentation smoothly. Printing service is not available at the venue. You are asked to bring your own manuscript if necessary.
  • Please upload and preview your presentation at the Speaker Media Room at least 2 hours before your presentation time (30 minutes before, only if your presentation is scheduled in the session on the first day of the Congress that starts at 8:30 am).
  • Please preview your presentation on the Preview-PC. After the preview, your presentation will be sent to the server. Have your presentation with you on a USB stick during the presentation for back-up.
  1. Sarawak – Land of the Hornbills

Sarawak covers an area of 125,000 sq. km. and is the largest of Malaysia’s 13 states. It is located in the heart of Southeast Asia and is one of the two Malaysian states (the other being Sabah to the north) on the island of Borneo. We share this exotic and beautiful island with our neighbours Brunei and Kalimantan (Indonesia). Sarawak is known as ‘Bumi Kenyalang’ (in English, Land of the Hornbills). The Rhinoceros Hornbill is the official state bird of Sarawak and is featured on the State’s coat of arms.

  1. The Host City – Kuching (‘Cat’ in Malay)

Kuching is the capital of Sarawak. The Lonely Planet Guide describes Kuching: “Borneo’s most stylish and sophisticated city brings together a kaleidoscope of cultures, crafts and cuisines. The bustling streets –some very modern, others with a colonial vibe –amply reward visitors with a penchant for aimless ambling.” We think the folks at the Lonely Planet Guide have nailed it! Home to over 26 ethnic groups, the residents of Kuching take great pride in their city; from our history and heritage to our wonderful and varied cuisine. Kuching’s residents are renowned for their hospitality and their good-naturedness. In its diversity there is unity, and this is why on 1st August 2015 Kuching was declared the world’s first ‘City of Unity’.

3. Visa Requirements

No visa is required for a stay of less than one month for nationals of all ASEAN countries, except Myanmar. For a stay exceeding one month, a visa will be required, except for Brunei and Singapore nationals. Commonwealth countries that require visas include Bangladesh, Cameroon, Ghana, Mozambique, Nigeria, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Your passport must have at least six months validity from your date of entry. The “Visa upon Arrival” service is no longer offered at the point of entry in Malaysia.

Types of Visa
The Malaysian Government issues Three (3) types of visas to foreign nationals:

  1. Single Entry Visa
    This is issued to foreign nationals who require a visa to enter Malaysia mainly for a social visit. It is normally valid for a single entry and for a period of three (3) months from the date of issue.
  1. Multiple Entry Visa
    This is issued to foreign nationals who require a visa to enter Malaysia mainly for business or government-to-government matters. It is normally valid for a period within three (3) months to twelve (12) months from the date of issue. Citizens of India and the People’s Republic of China who wish to enter Malaysia for the purpose of a Social Visit are eligible to apply for the Multiple Entry Visa. The validity of the Multiple Entry Visa is one (1) year. Each entry is for 30 days only and the extension of stay is not allowed.

Conditions for the Multiple Entry Visa are:

  • The applicant must show proof of sufficient funds for staying in Malaysia
  • The applicant must possess a valid and confirmed return ticket
  • Tour groups are not eligible to apply for Multiple Entry Visa.
  • The Multiple Entry Visa costs RM100.00 for Indian Citizens and RM30.00 for citizens of the People’s Republic of China.
  1. Transit Visa
    This is issued to foreign nationals who require a visa to enter Malaysia in transit to other countries. Foreign nationals in transit without leaving the airport premises and who continue their journey to the next destination with the same flight do not require a transit visa.

  1. Kuching International Airport (KIA)

KIA is served by Malaysia Airlines, MASwings, Air Asia, Malindo Air, Scoot, Wings Air, and XpressAir. Arrival at KIA from anywhere outside Sarawak (including from within Malaysia) is subject to an immigration check.

  • Money Changer at the airport: CIMB Bank has one foreign exchange outlet at Kuching International Airport, outside the arrival hall (Level 1). Open daily from 08.30 am to 05.30pm.
  • Foreign Exchange & ATM: Various machines accept major credit cards including VISA, MasterCard, Cirrus, Plus and Bankcard. ATM machines from Maybank, CIMB Bank, Hong Leong Bank, AmBank, and MEPS.

  1. Currency

The unit of currency is Malaysian Ringgit, indicated as ‘MYR’. Visit www.xe.com for the latest exchange rates. Foreign Exchange Booths are widely available and each clearly lists the exchange rate for all major currencies. ATMs are located at major bank branches, most shopping malls, the airport, and bus terminals. ATMs in Malaysia require a 6-digit PIN.

  1. Climate – Tropical all year round

The Equator cuts through Borneo less than 100km south of Sarawak. The climate is generally pleasant with frequent tropical showers throughout the year. There are two distinct seasons: November to March is rainy whilst April to October is drier. However, afternoon showers can occur throughout the year. The relative humidity in Malaysia is high, ranging from 70 to 90%. Comfortable clothing, made from natural fibres, is your best option. The meeting venue is fully air-conditioned and it can get a little cold sometimes; you may want to carry a sweater or scarf to keep you warm.

  1. Electricity

The voltage used in Malaysia is 230/240volts, 50 Hz. If your electrical appliance uses 110/120 volts, you need to use a transformer/converter to step-up to 230/240. Failing to do so will damage your electrical appliances. Most hotels do not provide the transformers so please check if you need a transformer and bring one with you. Malaysia uses the British Standard BS1363 three-pin (rectangular) plugs and sockets.

  1. Getting Around

Taxis are readily available at the airport and at major hotels in the downtown area of Kuching, or you can ask the hotel to call for a taxi. Upon arrival at the Kuching International Airport, you can purchase a taxi coupon from the counter in the arrival hall.

Taxi fares: The standard taxi fare from Kuching International Airport to hotels in downtown Kuching is range from MYR 40 and from Kuching International Airport to Damai Beach Resort is range from MYR 85. Within the downtown Kuching area, the taxi fare ranges from MYR 12 to MYR 15 depending on the distance travelled. Grab service is available too.

  1. Language

English is widely spoken in Sarawak, and especially in the cities.

  1. Congress Official Venue

Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) is the official venue for 18th AAAP Congress. BCCK environmentally conscious design is inspired by the rainforest.
